A portrait of the artist

Alpaca breeder Karen Oglesby and, as it turns out, accomplished sculptor, wowed everyone at the British Alpaca Society National Show in March with her latest creation, an alpaca head cast in bronze resin.

Not known for writing at length, here is Karen’s story.

I can’t draw or paint, I can take a reasonable photo, but basically I believed I was fairly devoid of artistic talent, and that’s certainly what my art teacher at school told me.

I couldn’t have been more surprised to find out that I could make a lump of clay almost resemble an alpaca

I bought a little ceramic rhino from a lady at a craft fair, who was sculpting whilst I chatted to her, and she invited me to spend a day with her to have a go. It took me almost three years to get around to it, but I couldn’t have been more surprised to find out that I really loved it and that actually I could make a lump of clay almost resemble an alpaca, which of course was my chosen subject. Anne told me I was a natural and sent me home with some clay to play with and we arranged another session – I was buzzing!
